About the Author

Arthur (Andy) M. Horne, Ph.D., is Distinguished Research Professor of Counseling Psychology at the University of Georgia in Athens. Research on violence reduction and bully-victim interventions is a primary focus of his work. For more than a quarter century, Andy has been engaged in funded research projects examining family, school, and community risk and protective factors related to childhood aggression and positive social development. His current projects include GREAT Schools and Families, a program funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for reducing violence in schools, the I-CARE Project examining positive character development, and the Bully Prevention Project which examines effective ways of reducing bullying in schools and communities. He has also authored and edited books on group counseling and group therapy, counseling boys and adolescent males, and family therapy. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Association for Specialists in Group Work.

Christi Bartolomucci, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist and is the Co-Director of Kids On The Move in Atlanta, Georgia. At this comprehensive center for children and adolescents with AD/HD, Dr. Bartolomucci serves as a clinician, consultant, and program developer. Christi received her doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from The University of Georgia. She completed a Clinical Child internship at The University of Louisville and a post-doctoral fellowship in Pediatric Psychology at Emory University. Since 1997, she has been actively involved with the Bully Prevention Project — a team effort committed to better understanding and addressing childhood bullying and victimization, childhood aggression, and the healthy development of children.

Dawn Newman-Carlson, Ph.D., a health psychologist, is the President of Carlson Health Promotion, P.A. Her primary practice is located in Jacksonville, FL. She earned her Doctorate in Counseling Psychology at the University of Georgia and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Pediatric Health Psychology at the University of Florida. Dr. Carlson was the co-developer and program administrator of the Bully Prevention Project. As a consultant, she trains school personnel and counselors in the areas of childhood aggression and bully prevention. She works with families and school systems to create lifestyles that promote health and self-esteem for children and adolescents. Dr. Carlson conducts Bully Busters training workshops and has been invited to present the Bully Busters program at national conferences.

Summary

The Bully Busters’ approach is research based and emphasizes both control and prevention. It helps teachers increase their awareness, knowledge base, and intervention skills to attack the root causes of bullying behavior and to deal with the problem confidently. The manual is organized into seven modules. Each module includes a teacher information component and a series of classroom activities. The activities (39 in all) are designed to increase student participation in reducing and preventing bullying, as well as to strengthen the teacher/student relationship.

Reviews

"As how-to manuals for teachers, these two volumes. . . serve as comprehensive educational and team building guides, and they function as classroom curriculum resources. For K-8 school counselors who are looking to take the lead with a proven program to combat bullying, 'Bully Busters' deserves serious consideration."
Larry L. Hill, Counseling Today, American Counseling Association
