About the Author |
| Dr. Joseph Sandford is a graduate of the College of William and Mary and received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from NOVA Southeastern University. He is author of the IVA+Plus Integrated Visual and Auditory CPT, the Captain's Log Cognitive Training System, SoundSmart and SmartDriver . In addition to his work authoring psychological and rehabilitation software, he runs a full-time clinical neuropsychology practice specializing in ADHD and brain injury in children and adults. Thus, he is able to speak to professionals working in these areas from the wealth of clinical experience he has gained from using his programs on a daily basis. |

This unique continuous performance test, which combines visual and auditory stimuli, assesses impulsivity, inattention, and hyperactivity in individuals from age 5 through adulthood in just 13 minutes. The client is instructed to click the mouse only when he or she sees or hears a "1" and not to click when he or she sees or hears a "2". Administration and scoring are fully automated, test instructions are presented both visually and aurally by the computer, and results are available immediately to the examiner.
Normative information is based on a sample of over 1,000 individuals from 5 to 90 years of age, screened to rule out attention, learning, neurological and psychological problems as well as medication. Norms are separated by gender and age.
IVA has demonstrated 92% sensitivity (i.e., an 8% rate of false negatives) and 90% specificity (i.e., a 10% rate of false positives) in differentiating ADHD and normal children. Hardware requirements: Pentium 166 or higher PC compatible processor, DirectX 7 (included on IVA CD—installation of DirectX 7 requires 70 MB of available hard drive space), 20 MB available hard drive program space, 32 MB RAM, Windows 95/98/ME/200, VGA color monitor, 4X CD ROM, external speakers or headphones, USB mouse, sound card.
