Summary

There are no words to describe how families feel when they learn that a child they love has been diagnosed with autism. This book was written for those families. It explains autism in simple terms, discusses the major characteristics associated with autism, and offers simple strategies for helping children with autism function in their homes, at school, and in the community. With the help of this book, families will begin to understand the puzzle called autism. It provides strategies for families to help their child:

  • Learn to be independent
  • Succeed in school
  • Build social skills
  • Communicate with others
Although there is no cure for autism, there is certainly hope. My Child Has Autism provides strategies that are the result of Clarissa Willis' 30 years of experience working with children with autism and their families, as a teacher, speech pathologist, early interventionist, and consultant.

Reviews

"Autism isn't something a person has, or a 'shell' someone is trapped inside. There is no 'normal' child hidden behind the autism… Autism is a way of being."
--Jim Sinclair

This book gives a great outlined approach to the parent and professional. It explains in great detail the why and how of Autism. This is a good starting manual for those parents whose child is newly diagnosed. It brings up characteristics of Autism that no one cares to touch on, like extensively explaining Sensory Processing Disorder, and helping your child develop life skills and why it's important. Communication is vital! And this book gives great tools on how to do this."
Jenny McCarthy - actress, mother, author of three NY Times bestsellers, leading spokesperson for autism awareness

"Anyone can benefit from Dr. Willis's insights - whether your child has a disability or not!"
Nancy Churin, Dallas Moms blog at dallasnews.com

"As an educator, I found this book to be quite useful. It is filled with beneficial information that can help a regular educator in her classroom. It is one of the clearest books I have yet read on the subject. Key terms are defined at the end of every chapter. The numerous references and resources, also found at the end of each chapter, allow for further study on a particular area. It can also provide a springboard for conversation between educators and parents."
