Reviews

"Addressing a painful topic with sensitivity, understanding and a non-judgmental attitude, this video manages to inject touches of humor into the storyline."
- Kathy Luckett, M.Ed

Trevor Romain and the Comical Sense Company score a home-run with this children's video on divorce. In an area where visual resources for children-of-divorce is lacking, this movie not only takes on the challenge of filling a void, but creates a resource for children, families and schools that has a high "usability" factor (Trevor has included a resource guide that is worth the price of the dvd alone). The characters of Skye and Jack lend a sense of safety through familiarity and approachability. These characters could very well be any child you know. Trevor brings out the vulnerabilities of divorce in a careful but realistic way. He hasn't shied away from the fact that it is perhaps the second most difficult issue for a child to endure, next to the loss of a parent. This is not a watered down, "cutesy" movie...as a therapist I was moved by the reality of pain that Trevor was able to capture. Finally, Trevor depicts Skye's pursuit of finding peace over her parent's divorce in the most creative and cognitively accurate way...I won't spoil it for you. It alone was worth the price of admission. No divorce is easy, no divorcing parent should believe that a conversation with their child about it will be either. Trevor offers a tool that can help bridge the gap. This movie will not replace healthy post-divorce parent-child interaction/involvement ...in fact, Trevor's gem is just the beginning of the conversation. A must have for anyone directly involved in the care of children-of-divorce.

Jack and Skye, animated middle school friends, return in this latest offering from children's book author Trevor Romain. Romain helps Skye work through anger, fear, and sadness when her parents announce their divorce. Through a courtroom dream sequence in which Skye opposes and Jack defends the parents' right to end their marriage, Skye learns that the divorce is neither her fault nor her problem to fix. She discovers that her parents will still love her, she doesn't have to take sides, shouldn't hide her emotions, and it's important to talk to friends. She also acquires some coping skills to deal with shared holidays and life in two homes. While Jack's jokes are a bit campy at times, the overall message is valuable, and the lack of a simplistic conclusion ("It will be tough for a while" and "There are no easy answers") will be appreciated by both parents and children. Special features on the DVD include "Trevor Live on Divorce," an interview with Romain, five music videos and karaoke, audio commentary, and a resource guide for parents and educators. This fast-paced and engaging production will effectively open the lines of communication and encourage healing.

This installment of the refreshingly real, yet animated, series about important life issues for preteens addresses the painful crossroads of divorce. Creator Trevor Romain puts one of his series' two main characters, Skye, in this story about her parents' separation. Skye first learns of Mom and Dad's decision when she returns from a field trip. We see her sense of comfort with them as she gets in the car, then watch her ball up in confusion as she learns of their decision. Over the course of the tale, Skye does the one thing most kids do?she blames herself for the separation. She tries talking with each parent, but ends up having a dream in which she's a lawyer taking her parents to court to save the marriage. Trevor serves as a helpful guide as he interacts with the characters. Never maudlin, often funny, and frequently more real than any live-action episode on the subject, this DVD gently takes kids through the stages and consequences of legal separation. Along with the bonus material, which includes Trevor talking about divorce to a live audience of kids in front of a peaceful lake, the video covers every conceivable inch of ground on this all-too common kid experience.
